Pakistan upsets hosts Hong Kong at HKFC
A busy opening day at Hong Kong Football Club comprising 37 Pool Matches – all played to a conclusion as there are no dead rubbers in the Pool stage – saved the best to last as Pakistan beat seventh seeded hosts Hong Kong in a thrilling encounter on the Glass Court.
Hong Kong took the lead thanks to a win by Alex Lau, but Pakistan struck back with Noor Zaman and Nasir Iqbal completing the win to put Pakistan top of Pool H with two wins.
In the other four-team men’s pool, seventh seeds USA are in pole position with two wins, despite finishing 7-7 on games with Germany, who lie second. Elsewhere in the men’s pools top four seeds Egypt, England, France and Switzerland opened up with wins, fifth and sixth seeds Malaysia and Colombia open their campaigns tomorrow.
In the Women’s Pools all the matches went to seeding, although second seeds USA had to fight back from one down to beat Scotland and fourth seeds England were pushed hard by Canada as they and the USA completed their second wins of the day.
Third seeds Belgium opened up with two 3-0 wins while defending champions Egypt play both their matches tomorrow.
